Remarks
Devices with PTP connections, like Canon Direct Camera Connection and Kodak EasyShare, are not mapped by Windows with a drive letter. In these cases, connect  using a card reader or use for EasyShare the work around described in the manual.
Windows and almost all cameras are using a quick format. Not the whole medium is wiped but only the FAT and the directory entries.
After (re)formatting, the files are still retrievable with a high rate of success.
However, a very few camera models perform a full format. All the information on the whole media is wiped and restoring is impossible anyhow! In these cases avoid the in-camera formatting and use deleting files instead.
When formatting is desired, use the format option of Windows with a right click on the drive in My Computer.
Using CFprep.exe or any other ??prep.exe will also destroy all the information. Files are no longer retrievable.
Taking new pictures or otherwise writing on the medium will limit the reclaim of the former contents to the extend of the writing.
